These terms are an agreement between you and Geometry Lab L.L.C-FZ ("Geometry", "we") for your use of HandToText at handtotext.app ("HandToText"). By using HandToText you accept these terms. The privacy policy explains how we handle information, and the refund policy explains refunds.

What HandToText does

HandToText turns photos, scans and PDFs of handwritten pages into text you can edit. Your browser prepares each page and sends it to our server, which uses an AI model from OpenAI to read the handwriting and returns the text to your browser. You can edit the text on the page, download it as a Word file or a plain text file, or copy it. HandToText keeps no page images and no transcripts: the text exists only on the open page until you download or copy it, and it is gone when you close or reload the page.

Transcriptions can contain errors

Transcriptions are produced automatically by an AI model. They can contain mistakes, such as wrong or missing words, or text in the wrong order.
A word that cannot be read is written [illegible], and an uncertain reading is written with a question mark, like [Margaret?]. Very hard handwriting can come back with many of these marks.
The text keeps the page's own language, spelling and line breaks. HandToText does not translate, correct or summarize it.
Check the text against the original before you rely on it, especially names, dates, numbers and anything with legal, medical or financial consequences.

Free pages

A new browser gets a few free pages, shown on the page, and each network address can use only a limited number of free pages per day. Before the first free page, your browser completes an automatic human check by Cloudflare. We may change the number of free pages for browsers that have not used them yet.

Page packs and payment

After the free pages, you can buy page packs. Each pack is a one-time payment for a number of pages. There is no subscription and nothing renews.
Packs are sold by Paddle (Paddle.com), our authorized reseller and the merchant of record for all orders. You buy a pack from Paddle under Paddle's buyer terms. Paddle handles payment, taxes, receipts and chargebacks, and issues refunds as described in our refund policy.
The price of each pack is shown before you pay. Paddle adds sales tax or VAT where it applies, so the total at checkout can be higher than the list price.
One page is one photo, scan or PDF page. A page counts when HandToText returns its text, including a page with little readable writing or no writing on it. A page we fail to transcribe, including one the AI provider refuses to process, is not counted.
If the text of a counted page is lost on its way back to you, the same page sent again from the same browser within 30 minutes of the counted run runs again without counting. Once that free run has returned the text, or once the 30 minutes have passed, sending the same page again counts as a new page.
Purchased pages do not expire. They work in the browser where you bought them, and in any other browser where you restore them with the email address you used at checkout. Anyone using a browser where your pages are available can use them, so on a shared computer clear this site's data when you finish.
If a payment is refunded or charged back, the pages it bought are taken off your balance. The refund policy explains what happens to pages you have already used.

Your pages and your text

You keep the rights you have in the pages you upload. You give us permission to process them only as needed to transcribe them for you, which includes sending them to our AI provider.
As between you and us, the text HandToText returns is yours to use. Other people may hold rights in what was written, for example the author of a letter.
Upload only pages you have the right to use and to have transcribed. If they contain information about other people, you are responsible for having the right to share it with HandToText for transcription.
If you use HandToText in a business to transcribe documents about other people, such as forms or records, you are responsible for the data protection rules that apply to you. Write to us before you start if you need a data processing agreement.

Acceptable use

Do not use HandToText to:

upload material that is unlawful, that you have no right to use, or that sexually exploits or endangers children;
get around the free-page limits, the human check or the request limits, for example by automating new browser sessions;
send requests to our server other than through the HandToText page, scrape or overload the service, or probe or attack its security;
resell HandToText or offer it as part of another service without our written permission.

We may stop or limit use that breaks these terms.

Availability and changes

HandToText may be unavailable at times, for example during maintenance, when a provider fails or when the tool is at capacity. A page that cannot be transcribed at such a time is not counted. We may change HandToText or these terms. A change does not take away pages you have already bought. The effective date above shows the current version, and using HandToText after a change means you accept it.

If we decide to close HandToText, we will announce it on this site at least 30 days before it closes. During that time you can use your remaining pages, or ask us at support@handtotext.app for a refund of the pages you have not used.

Disclaimers and limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, HandToText is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties that it will be uninterrupted or error-free or that any transcription is accurate or complete. You are responsible for checking the text and for how you use it. To the extent the law allows, Geometry is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for losses caused by errors in a transcription or by text you did not save, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for HandToText pages in the 12 months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow us to limit, such as liability for fraud, gross negligence, wilful misconduct, or death or personal injury caused by negligence, or your rights as a consumer.

Law and contact

These terms are governed by the laws applicable to Geometry Lab L.L.C-FZ in the United Arab Emirates, subject to the mandatory consumer protections of the place where you live, including your right to bring proceedings in the courts where you live. Your purchase from Paddle is governed by Paddle's buyer terms.
